We associate Florida with beaches, golf, tennis, old people, retirement, oranges, sun, tan bodies, and…wine? Maybe not just yet, but the stats show Florida will be a major wine growing state in the next 10-20 years.
Check out the trend below of Certified Wineries based in Florida starting in 1991. (FGGA.org). There has been a significant growth in the state’s wine industry and looks like its not slowing down.
There are currently 24 certified wineries in Florida and the state is ranked 7th in the USA for most wine produced by state, producing a total of 1,946,162 gallons (in 2012).
The 4 most popular wineries according to the TravelChannel.com are LakeRidge, Schnebly Redland’s, The Gilded Grape, and Rosa Fiorelli (TravelChannel).
Thanks to Spanish monks in the early 16th century, wine growing has been happening in Florida for a quite a bit of time. Originally the wine was grown only for Christian ceremonial use, but in today’s world it’s becoming more and more popular to indulge in some Florida wine!
